"5 Signs You're Wearing the Wrong Bra Size (And How to Fix It)"
If your bra feels uncomfortable by lunchtime, chances are it's not "just how bras feel" it's a sign your size is off. Studies show that a majority of women are wearing a bra size that doesn't actually fit them, often without realizing it.
The good news? Once you know what to look for, spotting the problem and fixing it takes just a few minutes. Here are the 5 most common signs your bra doesn't fit, and exactly what to do about each one.
1. The Band Rides Up at the Back
If your bra band creeps up toward your shoulder blades instead of sitting straight and level around your ribcage, your band size is too big.
The Fix: Go down a band size. A properly fitted band should sit horizontally all the way around your torso, snug enough to stay in place on its own without the straps doing all the work.
2. Straps Keep Digging In or Slipping Off
Constantly adjusting your straps throughout the day is a clear sign something's wrong. Straps that dig deep grooves into your shoulders mean your band is too loose, forcing the straps to carry more weight than they should. Straps that slip off, on the other hand, often mean they need tightening or the style simply doesn't suit your shoulder shape.
The Fix: Tighten your straps first. If digging-in persists even after adjusting, size down your band so the band does more of the supporting work.
3. Gaping or Spilling at the Cups
Empty space at the top of your cups means your cup size is too big. Spilling over the top or sides means it's too small.
The Fix: Remember band and cup sizes move together. If cups are too big, try a smaller cup with the same band. If you're spilling over, size up in the cup while possibly sizing down the band (this is called finding your "sister size").
4. The Center Doesn't Sit Flat Against Your Chest
The center panel of your bra (called the gore) should lie completely flat against your breastbone. If it's popping away from your body, your cups are too small and can't fully contain your bust.
The Fix: Size up in the cup. This is one of the clearest fit indicators a properly sized bra will always have the center gore resting flush against your skin.
5. You Feel Discomfort by Midday
Do you find yourself wanting to unhook your bra the moment you get home? Ongoing discomfort soreness, redness, or a general feeling of "I can't wait to take this off" usually means the size (or sometimes the style) isn't right for your body.
The Fix: Re-measure yourself using a soft measuring tape (check our Perfect Bra Size Guide for step-by-step instructions), and don't hesitate to try a size up or down from what you've always worn bodies change, and so should your bra size.
When Did You Last Get Measured?
Many women wear the same bra size for years without re-checking it, even though weight changes, hormonal shifts, and simply time can all affect your size. As a general rule, it's worth re-measuring every 6–12 months.
